Alan Keith and Joel Flores met one afternoon in October of 2008 and had an instant connection. Joel later brought Alan a box of chocolates to sample. Tasting what he thought was a truffle turned out to be cake.
“These are fantastic! Where did you get them?” asked Alan.
“I made them,” replied Joel.
Joel told him the story of an elderly friend of his, the lovely Ms. Betty. She and Joel often baked together and swapped recipes. One day Ms. Betty made a batch of bon-bons and after one bite Joel asked for the recipe! “No,” replied Ms. Betty, “this is my secret and no one can have till I die!” Joel only asked one more time but the answer was still, “No.”
Time passed and they drifted apart. One day a knock came at Joel’s door - it was Ms. Betty’s daughter with the sad news that Ms. Betty had passed away. She was holding a box with Joel’s name and address on it. She handed it to him. Inside, he found a note that read,
Dear Joel ,
Here is the recipe for my bon bons - use it well.
Betty
From that wonderful gift, Velvets Bakery was born and Ms. Betty’s legacy lives on.
